What Makes a Wart "Resistant"?

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and commonly appear on the hands, feet (plantar warts), and other areas. Most warts respond to standard treatments such as salicylic acid, cryotherapy (freezing), or in-office procedures like electrosurgery or laser ablation. However, a significant number of patients experience warts that simply will not go away — or that return repeatedly after treatment.

Resistant warts are particularly common on the soles of the feet, where thick skin makes penetration of topical treatments difficult, and around the nails, where treatment options are limited. Patients with compromised immune systems may also experience persistent or widespread warts that resist conventional therapy.

After months or even years of repeated treatments, many patients are told they have exhausted their options. That is where LDRT comes in.

How LDRT Treats Resistant Warts

Low-dose radiation therapy works by delivering precisely targeted radiation to the wart and surrounding tissue. This disrupts the viral replication process within infected cells and stimulates a localized immune response that helps the body clear the infection.

LDRT has been used for decades in Europe for recalcitrant warts, and published literature supports its effectiveness when other modalities have failed. Treatment is painless, requires no anesthesia, and involves no cutting or wound care. Each session lasts only minutes, and a typical course consists of several treatments delivered over a few weeks.

Who Is a Candidate for LDRT?

You may be a candidate for wart treatment with LDRT if:

  • Cryotherapy, salicylic acid, or other topical treatments have failed after multiple attempts
  • Surgical removal resulted in recurrence
  • Your warts are in locations that make standard treatment difficult or painful
  • You have been dealing with persistent warts for six months or longer
  • You are looking for a noninvasive option that does not require wound care or recovery time

What to Expect at Heelex

During your consultation, we evaluate the warts, review your treatment history, and determine whether LDRT is the right approach. If you are a candidate, treatment sessions are scheduled at our Knoxville, TN clinic. Each visit is brief and comfortable. There is no preparation required and no restrictions after treatment. You can return to your normal activities immediately. Most patients begin to see their warts respond within weeks of completing the treatment course.

Working With Your Care Team

Your dermatologist or podiatrist knows your history and your options better than anyone. We don't replace them, and we wouldn't want to. We're a resource for them — for patients who have a wart that keeps coming back after the usual treatments. You stay in their care: we treat only what's referred, keep your doctors informed, and refer you back to them. We're not here to take anyone's patients.

Is Low-Dose Radiation Therapy safe?

The dose used for benign conditions is a small fraction of cancer-treatment radiation — roughly 10–25× lower — delivered in a few short sessions. Low-dose radiation therapy for benign disease has decades of clinical use, and side effects are uncommon and typically mild.

Every treatment plan is prepared by a board-certified medical physicist and reviewed by a licensed physician. Whether it's the right option for you — and any personal considerations — is decided together during your consultation.
